Georgia's Pre-Civil War Forts

An Evolving Inventory

Georgia's rich military history is reflected in her fortification system. From the earliest Spanish fortifications of the 16th century to the massive brick structures of the Antebellum Period, these archaeological sites have a great story to tell about our shared past. Before this story can be told, however, these forts must be identified and good examples chosen for public interpretation. At present, very few fort sites in the state have been identified and interpreted to the public. The goal of the LAMAR Institute's "Pre-Civil War Forts Initiative" is research, locate, identify, and rank these sites. This website presents summary data from this active project.
